The book's central and provocative move is to shift the focus of evolution from organisms to the genes they carry. On this view, living bodies are best understood as survival machines built by genes to carry copies of themselves into the next generation, and it is genes, not individuals or groups, that are the fundamental units on which natural selection acts. Written with unusual clarity and force, the book reshaped how biologists and general readers alike think about evolution, and while some of its emphases have been debated and refined in the decades since, its core reframing, that viewing life from the gene's perspective illuminates behaviour that otherwise seems baffling, remains one of the most influential ideas in modern biology. The book is also a model of scientific writing, taking a technical shift in perspective and making it not only comprehensible but genuinely exciting for general readers, which is part of why it has never gone out of print.
